Medicare is a federal system of health insurance for people over 65 years of age and for certain younger people with disabilities. To begin to understand it, you'll need to know the "parts" of coverage that are available. Each of these parts covers distinct types of health services (see below.)

Medicare: Information

PART A
HOSPITAL INSURANCE

Part A helps cover the cost of inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or hospice care.

PART B
MEDICAL INSURANCE

Part B helps cover the cost for doctors' services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and other medical services.

PART D
PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLANS

Part D helps cover the cost of many outpatient prescription drugs.

PARTS C AND F
MEDICARE ADVANTAGE AND MEDIGAP

Parts C or F include Part A, Part B, and sometimes Part D all in one plan.
